      Description
       

      As the head of judicial administration of Alborz Province in January 2018, Fazelian is responsible for the arrest and prosecution of peaceful protesters, on charges of breach of the peace and acting against national security.

      The nationwide protests of 2017-2018, known as the protests of December 2017, were widespread demonstrations in protest of inflation and corruption, which began on 28 Dec 2017 in Mashhad and several cities in Khorasan province and quickly spread throughout Iran, including harsher anti-government slogans. .The crackdown on protesters led to the deaths of at least 25 protesters and detainees.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada placed Ahmad Fazilian on its sanctions list on October 31, 2022 due to serious and systematic violations of human rights, especially his direct role in the unjust and systematic persecution of the Baha'i religious minority. According to this statement, all his assets in Canada will be frozen and he will not be allowed to enter this country. On January 23, 2023, the UK government sanctioned Ahmad Fazelian due to unfair trials and and egregious punishments, including use of the death penalty for political purposes. According to the statement, this sanction includes the freezing of Fazelian's assets and a travel ban to the UK.
