As a public prosecutor of Arak, he is responsible for the violation of Vahid Heidari’s human rights, by refusing to investigate his suspicious death in prison. Heidari was detained during the December 2017 - January 2018 protests, and his death was declared a suicide , despite the contradicting evidence. Ghasemi is also responsible for arresting Mohammad Najafi, Heidari’s lawyer in order to prevent the dissemination of information about the death of this prisoner.
2017-2018 protests started against corruption and high prices but quickly turned into anti-regime protests. The government's brutal crackdown of the protest led to the death of at least 25 protesters.

- Abbas Ghasemi, as the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Arak and a member of the County Security Council, was responsible for the mass arrest of protesters and the violent suppression of unarmed demonstrators during the nationwide protests of 2018 in this city. The January 2018 protests were nationwide protests against inflation and corruption, which began on 27 December, 2017 in Mashhad and several cities in the Khorasan Province, and quickly spread throughout Iran, with harsher anti-government slogans. The suppression of these protests resulted in the deaths of some protesters and the arrest of many others.
