      Description

      Hassan Akharian, as the head of ward 5 of Rajai Shahr prison, is responsible for murder, ill-treatment, torturing and depriving prisoners of medical treatment. Akharian is especially responsible for the death of Afshin Osanloo, a political prisoner, and the suspicious death of Bahram Tasviri Khiabani in solitary confinement in Rajai Shahr Prison. Bahram Tasviri Khiabani, a prisoner in Rajai Shahr Prison, testified before his death in a video message that he had been tortured and raped by prison officials.

On 10 October, 2011, the European Union placed 29 Iranian officials on the human rights sanctions list, including Hassan Akharian, for their role in widespread and gross violations of the rights of Iranian citizens. According to this decision, Akharian has been banned from entering the countries of this union and all his assets in Europe have been confiscated. According to the EU statement, Hassan Akharian has been sanctioned for his role in torturing and killing prisoners, as well as preventing medical treatment for prisoners.
