Baneshi, as the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Shiraz, has been responsible for issuing and executing large-scale death sentences, including the execution of three prisoners accused of collaborating with the Birth for Freedom Foundation, and six people charged with two counts of attempted murder without compliance with principles of fair trial.
Baneshi has also been responsible for issuing and enforcing inhumane sentences, including amputation. He had said in February 2011: "We try to implement the rules that Islam has provided for thieves, and in some cases amputation, if it is legally possible. It is not the that the judiciary has never carried out such sentences, because, for example, two amputations have been carried out in Shiraz Central Prison in the past month."

Jaber Baneshi, as the public and revolutionary prosecutor of Shiraz, is responsible for detaining, torturing, and issuing heavy sentences for Baha'is because of their religious beliefs. Among these cases, Raha Sabet, a Baha'i citizen who has been providing voluntary social services in the underprivileged neighborhoods of Shiraz, has spent three and a half years of his sentence in solitary confinement in the No. 100 detention centre in Shiraz by the direct order of Baneshi. According to Baneshi, in February 2007, at least three Baha'i prisoners were imprisoned for their religious beliefs.

On 10 October, 2011, the European Union placed 29 Iranian officials on the human rights sanctions list, including Jaber Banshi, for their role in widespread and gross violations of the rights of Iranian citizens. According to the decision, Banshi will be barred from entering the countries of the union and all his assets will be confiscated in Europe. According to the EU statement, Jaber Banshi, the Shiraz prosecutor, is responsible for excessive use of the death penalty.
