Ahmad Alam al-Hoda

Alam al-Hoda, as the Friday prayer leader of Mashhad, and the representative of the Supreme Leader in the Khorasan Razavi province violated the right to freedom of expression by requesting that no permits be issued for music concerts and cultural programs in the city of Mashhad. During the Friday prayers sermon on 12th of August 2016, he warned against holding any music concert in Mashhad and asked the officials of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to stop issuing permits for music concerts, comedy movies, and other art programs in Mashhad.

Following Alam al-Hoda’s remarks, the Ministery of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced that a permit would no longer be issued for holding a music concert in Mashhad.

Alam al-Hoda, as the Friday Imam of Mashhad, and representative of the Supreme Leader in the Khorasan Razavi province, has violated the rights of women. He has made repeated statements inciting violence against women, including calling on the police force to suppress and punish women who do not observe hijab, inviting people to confront women with bad hijab, and the demand for gender segregation in universities.
