Malik Ajdar Sharifi, as the Head of Judicial Administration of East Azerbaijan Province, was responsible for holding the trial and issuing a stoning sentence for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was sentenced in 2006 to ninety-nine lashes for participating in the murder of her husband and having an illicit relationship, according to a ruling issued by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Osko (East Azerbaijan). Four months later, the Tabriz Criminal Court sentenced Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani to stoning for adultery. The verdict was issued while Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani had denied her charge in the last hearing, and the court sentenced her to death by relying on "Judge’s Knowledge”.
In November 2010, Sharifi said about Sakineh Mohammadi's sentence: "Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani's stoning sentence is binding if it is finally approved. The ugliness of adultery has spread all over the world, and Ashtiani has been sentenced to stoning for adultery.
In December 2011, the ISNA news agency reported, quoting Sharifi, that "since there are no executive facilities for stoning, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani may be executed by hanging."
