      Description

As a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Zohreh Elahian supported the killing, detention, and torture of people during the 2022 nationwide protests in Iran.

She is one of the 227 MPs who signed a statement on 6 November 2022, calling for the Judiciary to deal with the protesters decisively and carry out the death sentences handed down to them.

Earlier, in an interview with Fars news agency, Zohreh Elahian had called for legal action to be taken against the domestic media for covering the 2022 protests and said: “some of the media in Iran make use of public funds, but their activities are detrimental to the national interests and security. The Judiciary should launch an investigation and bring charges against them.”

The 2022-23 protests began following the death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini on September 13, 2022, in the detention of the morality police of the Islamic Republic. These protests quickly spread across the country and are remembered as the largest revolutionary uprising against the government since the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian government responded to these protests with deadly violence. According to human rights organizations, the security forces of the Islamic Republic have killed at least 551 people, with a minimum of 68 of them being children.
