- Description
As a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Zohreh Elahian supported the killing, detention, and torture of people during the 2022 nationwide protests in Iran.
She is one of the 227 MPs who signed a statement on 6 November 2022, calling for the Judiciary to deal with the protesters decisively and carry out the death sentences handed down to them.
Earlier, in an interview with Fars news agency, Zohreh Elahian had called for legal action to be taken against the domestic media for covering the 2022 protests and said: “some of the media in Iran make use of public funds, but their activities are detrimental to the national interests and security. The Judiciary should launch an investigation and bring charges against them.”
The 2022 nationwide protests in Iran broke out following the murder of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s morality police on 13 September 2022 and continue in various forms in different cities to this day. According to reports by human rights organisations, at least 469 citizens, including 63 children and 32 women, have been killed by law enforcement and security forces, and thousands have been arrested and tortured.
