      Description
As the presiding judge of Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court, Morteza Barati has sentenced three protesters: Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi, and Saeid Yaqubi to death Based on these convicts’ confessions obtained through torture, the Revolutionary Court sentenced them to death on the charge of Moharebeh [waging war against God] for drawing weapons during the protests of 16 November 2022 in Isfahan. Branch 9 of the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the decision on 9 May 2023. The judicial authorities provided no evidence or documentation to support the claim that firearms were discovered and seized from these protesters. The protests of 16 November 2022 were a continuation of The 2022 protests uprising and commemorate the anniversary of the protests of November 2019 through demonstration and strike action.

The 2022-23 protests began following the death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini on September 13, 2022, in the detention of the morality police of the Islamic Republic. These protests quickly spread across the country and are remembered as the largest revolutionary uprising against the government since the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian government responded to these protests with deadly violence. According to human rights organizations, the security forces of the Islamic Republic have killed at least 551 people, with a minimum of 68 of them being children.
