      Description
      Alireza Zakani, in his role as the head of the Basij Student Organization at Tehran universities, was responsible for the detention, assault, and suppression of students at the University of Tehran dormitory on July 9, 1999. In a 2018 interview, he stated that he had a minute-by-minute report from the scene and was present until the very last day. Additionally, Mohsen Pirhadi, a member of the Tehran City Council, mentioned in a note that he had a mission to be present in the eastern streets of the dormitory of the University of Tehran and stated that Alireza Zakani was the one who "divided tasks among the Persons" and positioned individuals in the surrounding streets of the dormitory of the University of Tehran. Following the closure of Salam newspaper on July 6, 1999, a protest was held in the dormitory of the University of Tehran. Following the protest, plainclothes forces (consisting of the Basij and extremist militias such as Ansar Hezbollah) stormed the university dormitory, beating students and destroying property and arresting large numbers of students. At least one person named Ezzatollah Ebrahimnejad was killed in the attack of the security forces on the university campus. After that, two people named Saeed Zeinali and Fereshte Alizadeh went missing.

      Description
      Alireza Zakani is responsible for threatening and limiting women due to non-compliance with hijab rules, in his position as Mayor of Tehran Zakani is accused of in the institutionalising gender discrimination due to banning women without hijab from public spaces and public services.In interviews, he had announced that it is mandatory to wear hijab in places where municipal services are provided, and that the municipality is fully prepared to help the police regarding wearing hijab. Faraz online newspaper reported on August 24, 2013 that Tehran Municipality is deploying 400 members of its security unit known as "Hijab Watcher" in the subway. The duty of these forces is to give verbal warnings, prevent them from entering the subway cars, and deliver people with low hijab or no hijab to the police.

On December 8, 2023, the United Kingdom placed Alireza Zakani on its sanctions list for serious human rights violations, infringing on the right to freedom of expression, and gender discrimination through the imposition of compulsory hijab on women. According to the statement, any assets belonging to Alireza Zakani in the United Kingdom will be frozen, and he will be prohibited from traveling to the country.
