On Feb 23, 2011, the US Treasury Department placed Mortazavi on its list of human rights sanctions for his role in torturing detainees during the 2009 protests in Kahrizak Prison. According to this decision, Mortazavi's assets in the United States or under the control of American companies and banks have been frozen and he has been banned from entering the United States.
On March 33, 2012, the European Union placed Mortazavi on its list of human rights sanctions for his role in widespread detentions, heavy sentences, and the deaths of detainees during the 2009 protests. According to this decision, Mortazavi's assets in the European Union have been frozen and his entry into the EU countries has been banned.
