- Description
Mohammad Reza Ebrahimi, in his capacity as the public and revolutionary prosecutor of Nowshahr, is responsible for the torture and death of Javad Rouhi, one of the detainees of the 2022 protests.
Ebrahimi is accused of having a role in the arbitrary detention of Javad Rouhi, his three-time death sentence for participating in the 2022 protests and keeping him in prison despite the overturn of his sentence by the Supreme Court and preventing his access to necessary medical care in Nowshahr Prison, leading to his death.
Javad Rouhi was arrested during the protests on September 21, 2022, in Nowshahr, and was sentenced to three death sentences and seven and a half years in prison on charges of "corruption on earth, apostasy, confrontation with the Islamic government (Moharebeh), and insulting the leadership" in the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Sari. This verdict was overturned in the ninth branch of the Supreme Court.
After that, his case was referred to several branches and was in a state of uncertainty. Javad Rouhi died on Friday, September 9, with severe physical conditions due to the obstruction of necessary medical interventions in Nowshahr Prison.
The 2022 nationwide protests in Iran broke out following the murder of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s Morality Police on 13th of September. The protests continued in various forms in different cities for over three months. According to reports by human rights organizations, at least 537, including 68 children, have been killed by the law enforcement and security forces of the Islamic Republic.
