Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi, in his capacity as theChif of Moral Security Police, MAJA is responsible for the detention that led to the death of Mahsa Amini by the forces under his command. He is also accountable for the lack of transparent and effective investigations and the identification of the perpetrators.
The 2022-23 protests began following the death of Mahsa (Gina) Amini on September 13, 2022, in the detention of the morality police of the Islamic Republic. These protests quickly spread across the country and are remembered as the largest revolutionary uprising against the government since the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The Iranian government responded to these protests with deadly violence.
According to human rights organizations, the security forces of the Islamic Republic have killed at least 551 people, with a minimum of 68 of them being children.

On the October 10, 2022, the United Kingdom sanctioned Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi for his responsibility in the death of Jina Mahsa Amini and serious human rights violations. According to the statement, Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi cannot travel to the UK, and his assets in the UK will be frozen.
On September 22, 2022, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi for his responsibility in the death of Jina Mahsa Amini during the detention by the Moral Security Police and serious human rights violations in Iran. According to the U.S. Department of State, all assets of Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi in the United States will be blocked, and American individuals and companies will be prohibited from dealing with him.
On October 17, 2022, the European Union sanctioned Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeghchi for his responsibility in the death of Jina Mahsa Amini during the detention by the Moral Security Police and serious human rights violations in Iran. According to the EU statement, any assets of Cheshmeghchi in Europe will be frozen, and he will be prevented from traveling to EU member countries.
