In his role as Deputy Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Tehran and as Acting Head of the Prosecutor’s Office for Tehran’s District 33, Ali Ghenaat Kar Mavardiani is responsible for issuing indictments against women detained during the 2022-2023 protests. He has issued indictments against many women for their participations in the protests and has requested the court to punish them on the basis of charges such as the following: • Gathering and conspiring to commit a crime against national security • Propaganda activities against the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran • Disturbing public order and peace through participation in illegal gatherings (Mahsa) • Gathering and conspiring to commit a crime against internal/external security (Mahsa) • Spreading lies through computers
The Women, Life, Freedom protests began following the killing of Mahsa (Jina) Amini on September 13, 2022, while in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s Moral Security Police. The protests quickly spread across the country and are considered the largest revolutionary uprising against the government since the founding of the Islamic Republic.
The government in Iran responded to these protests with deadly violence. According to reports from human rights organizations, the Islamic Republic’s law enforcement and security forces have killed at least 551 people, at least 68 of whom were children.

The Women, Life, Freedom protests began following the killing of Mahsa (Jina) Amini on September 13, 2022, while in the custody of the Moral Security Police of the Islamic Republic.
